Pres. Mahuad took emergency economic measures to lower inflation and stabilize the economy. His austerity plan was widely protested with massive national strikes by military leaders and Indian groups.  2

Ecuador defaulted on part of its international debt by failing to make a $44.5 million payment on its internationally borrowed money in Brady Bonds. Continuing devaluation of the sucre pulled Ecuador into its worst economic crisis since the 1920s.  3
