Hundreds of thousands of Indians joined a protest over government policies and the development of the Amazon basin for foreign oil companies. The protesters demanded a constitutional amendment recognizing the multiethnic nature of Ecuador and promulgating major land reform.  1

One hundred forty-eight Indian communities were granted title to 1.2 million hectares of land in the Amazon basin. Commercial development was banned in the area, but the regime reserved oil exploration rights.  3
