Peruvian commandos stormed the Japanese ambassador's residence, freeing 72 hostages and ending the 126-day-long crisis. In addition to one hostage and two soldiers, all 14 rebels were killed in the raid. Pres. Fujimori's approval ratings soared to 67 percent as a result of the action.  1

Liberal premier Javier Valle Riestra resigned his position, remarking on Pres. Fujimori's totalitarian governmental policies.  2
 
Aug. 20
 
In a surprising change of his cabinet, Pres. Fujimori replaced his armed forces chief Nicholas Hermoza Rios, who was widely considered one of Peru's three most powerful people.  3
 
Oct. 26
 
A treaty with Ecuador was signed, ending a 50-year-long border dispute with Peru. The cause of a 1995 war between the two countries, the border dispute was the last unresolved conflict of its kind in Latin America.  4
