Presidential elections did not produce a clear victor. The Congress appointed an interim president and planned new elections.  1

The military again seized power, but fell in a few weeks after a general strike and protests destabilized the regime. Congress elected Lydia Gueiler Tejada (Bolivia's first woman president) to serve in the interim.  2
