Paraguay vice president Luis Maria Argana was assassinated by unidentified gunmen. The vice president had publicly disagreed with Pres. Cubas in his decision to release Oviedo from prison; Argana's murder was largely attributed to Pres. Cubas and his supporters.  1

March 28

Pres. Cubas was forced out of office because he was allegedly involved in the assassination of his vice president. Cubas had publicly refused to jail Gen. Oviedo, his political mentor, who was convicted of leading a failed coup against Pres. Wasmosy in 1996. Both men fled the country as they lost control of the government. Senate leader Luis Angel Gonzalez Macchi was sworn in as president.  2
