Aylwin released the report of the “Commission of Truth and National Reconciliation,” charging the previous regime with massive human rights violations and confirming at least 2,279 disappearances.  1

In the first human rights prosecution since the return of democracy, Gen. Manuel Contreras Sepúlveda and Col. Pedro Espinoza were charged with the 1976 murder of Orlando Letelier.  2
 
1993, Nov. 12
 
The Chilean Court sentenced Gen. Contreras Sepúlveda and Col. Espinoza to six and seven years in prison, respectively, for their roles in the Letelier murder.  3
 
Dec. 11
 
Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, son of the former president, won the presidential election by a landslide. He pledged to continue free market economic policies.  4
