Presidential and congressional elections. PDC candidate Patricio Aylwin Azócar won the presidential bid. His Democratic Concordance coalition gained a majority of seats in the Congress.  1
 
1990, March 11
 
Pres. Aylwin assumed power as the first democratically elected president since 1970. He vowed social and economic reforms but had to promise to maintain both a free market economy and amnesty for the military. Pinochet remained in charge of the military and security forces.  2
 
March 12
