The CGT, Argentina's largest labor federation, called a 36-hour general strike to protest Menem's austerity measures. Between 80 and 90 percent of the workforce stayed home, bringing the country to a virtual standstill.  1

Police discovered the body of a prominent journalist, José Luiz Cabezas, gruesomely murdered. The discovery sparked allegations that Cabezas had been executed in retaliation for an article on corruption in the Buenos Aires police force.  2

A series of protests erupted throughout Argentina to express dissatisfaction with government policies widely blamed for the 17 percent unemployment rate.  3
