Pres. Saparmurad A. Niyazov visited the United States and met with Pres. Clinton for talks on the global economy. While on his U.S. tour, Niyazov reached agreements with several U.S. energy firms to research the possibility of a gas pipeline that would pass through Turkey and reach markets in the West.  1
 
1999, Dec. 28
 
Pres. Niyazov (also referred to as Turkmenbashy, or Leader of All Turkmens) was unanimously elected president for life of Turkmenistan. Niyazov had created what some international analysts noted as a cult of personality, developed through vigorous self-promotion, propaganda, and an iron-fisted authoritarian reign.  2
