The Tajik Supreme Soviet approved a land reform law giving all citizens the right to lifetime ownership of land and to lease and inherit land.  1
 
May 8
 
Demonstrations throughout April and the first part of May by activists opposed to President Nabiyev's regime culminated in the formation of a new coalition government. Nabiyev remained president, however.  2
 
Sept. 7
 
President Nabiyev was forced to resign as a result of serious political confrontations reflecting the regional divisions within the republic.  3
 
Nov. 10
 
Acting President Akbarsho Iskandarov and his coalition government resigned and called for a cease-fire as procommunist militias laid siege to Dushanbe and occupied much of Tajikistan.  4
