Belarus set an economic union with Russia, instantly transferring 1.6 trillion rubles into the Belarusan economy and threatening to destabilize the Russian economy.  1

The Belarusan head of state, Stanislav S. Shushkevich, a liberal, was dismissed because of his support for free market reforms and his opposition to aligning with Russia. On Jan. 28 former Communist Mechislav Grib was elected in his place.  2
