The ruling National Salvation Front (mostly made up of former Communists) split when the NSF–22 December Group (supporting President Iliescu) elected a national council and described itself as a “social-democratic” party.  1
 
Sept. 27
 
The second general election since 1989 took place. The Democratic Convention of Romania (DCR), a Center-Right coalition, did well in urban areas, and the Democratic National Salvation Front (DNSF), the party of incumbent president Iliescu, did well in rural areas.  2
 
Oct. 11
 
Ion Iliescu (of the DNSF) won another four-year term as president in a runoff election, defeating Emil Constantinescu (of the DCR).  3
 
Nov. 4
 
President Iliescu appointed Nicolae Vacaroiu as prime minister.  4
