A series of trials of those held responsible for the dictatorship were held. Col. Papadopoulos, Col. Makarezos, and Brig. Gen. Pattakos were sentenced to death, but Karamanlis quickly commuted their sentences to life imprisonment.  1

A new constitution was adopted, reinforcing the powers of the president. On June 19, K. Tsatsos was elected president by the parliament.  2
 
July 29
 
The Greek Orthodox Church broke off relations with the Vatican after the Vatican violated its agreement not to appoint a new Uniate bishop in Greece.  3
