In the wake of Turkey's invasion of Cyprus, the military junta collapsed (See 1974, July 20). President Ghizikis called on prominent civilians to form a new government for national emergency. Konstantinos Karamanlis was reinstated as prime minister, thus restoring democratic civilian government.  1

General elections took place for the first time since 1967. Karamanlis's New Democracy Party took 54 percent of the vote, thus a majority in the parliament.  2
