Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Belgrade with an apology for Soviet treatment of Yugoslavia in 1949 and called for a renewal of close ties. Tito secured recognition of Yugoslavia's independence in domestic and international affairs.  1

A joint communiqué, issued at the end of the Khrushchev-Tito meeting in Belgrade, called for a European collective security treaty, the banning of nuclear weapons, and UN membership for communist China.  2
