János Kádár resigned as premier but kept his post as first secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party. He took a post in the cabinet as minister without portfolio. On Jan. 28, First Deputy Ferenc Muennich succeeded Kádár as premier.  1

Budapest announced the executions, after a secret trial, of former premier Imre Nagy, General Pal Malater, and two other leaders of the 1956 revolt. Others received prison terms.  2
