István Dobi formally resigned as premier and was succeeded by Mátyás Rákosi.  1

A purge, reportedly dictated by a visiting Soviet group, took a toll of 30 Jewish Communist leaders.  2
 
July 2
 
Following a shakeup of the top Communist leadership, the government resigned. The next day, parliament reelected István Dobi to the presidency and Imre Nagy to the vice presidency. On July 4 Prime Minister Rákosi resigned, as a concession to the farmers and consumers, to make way for the new premier, Imre Nagy.  3
