A fusion of Communists and Social Democrats into the United Workers' Party was engineered by the Communists.  2

President Tildy was forced to resign and was replaced by the chairman of the United Workers' Party, former Socialist Arpád Szakasits.  3

After completing its purge of anticommunist members, the Smallholders' Party called for Premier Dinnyes's resignation and put procommunist István Dobi in his place. The real power, however, was in the hands of the Communist deputy premier, Mátyás Rákosi.  4
 
Dec. 27
 
The refusal of the Catholic Church to make concessions to the government led to the arrest of Josef Cardinal Mindszenty and other dignitaries on charges of conspiracy to overthrow the government. Cardinal Mindszenty was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment (Feb. 8, 1949). He sought asylum in the American embassy.  5
