Following President Gottwald's death (March 14), Premier Zapotocky was unanimously elected president by Parliament. He was succeeded as premier by Viliam Siroky. Antonin Novotny retained his earlier post of deputy premier and assumed leadership of the Communist Party Secretariat.  2
