In an attempt to destroy the influence of the Catholic Church, the government founded its own Catholic action committee to take the direction of Church affairs away from Archbishop Joseph Beran and the Catholic hierarchy.  2

The Vatican, as a countermeasure, excommunicated all active supporters of communism in Czechoslovakia.  3
 
Oct. 14
 
The government assumed full control over Church affairs and required all clergy to swear an oath of loyalty to the state. Most of the lower clergy complied.  4
