At year's end the pope convened a special synod on the problems in Europe caused by the collapse of communism, such as the rise of nationalism and anti-Semitism. Protestant and Anglican delegates accepted a papal invitation to attend, but the Orthodox Church sent only one emissary, reflecting the growing rift between the two churches over proselytism in Central and Eastern Europe.  1

The final report of the Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission was declared not in accord with the fullness of the Catholic faith by the office of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the doctrinal watchdog. This added considerable strain to attempts at bringing the two churches closer together.  2
