Pope John Paul II was shot and wounded in an assassination attempt. The Bulgarian assailant, Mehemet Ali Agca, was arrested immediately and was sentenced on July 22 to life imprisonment, after a three-day trial.  1

The pope published an encyclical on human work (Laborem Exercens) that analyzed the place of work in human life and proposed a new economic order (neither capitalist nor Marxist) based on the rights of workers and the dignity of work.  2
