Opening of the fourth and last session of Vatican II. The pope announced that a synod of bishops would collaborate in the governance of the Church.  1

Visit of the pope to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly and to throw the weight of his authority behind the struggle for peace.  2
 
Oct. 28
 
The pope declared the decrees of Vatican II to be Church doctrine. He denounced anti-Semitism and absolved the Jews of the charge of collective guilt for the crucifixion of Christ.  3
