Pope Paul VI and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I of the Eastern Orthodox Church conferred in Jerusalem, during the pope's visit to the Holy Land.  1

Opening of the third session of the Ecumenical Council (Vatican II). It ended on Nov. 21 with the constitution (De ecclesia) providing for the sharing of power in the Catholic Church between pope and bishops. It furthermore pronounced in favor of eventual Christian unity and recognition of autonomy for the Eastern churches.  2
