A plebiscite on Gibraltar registered 12,762 votes. Of these, 12,138 favored remaining a British possession, while 44 voted for union with Spain.  1
 
1968, May 5
 
The Spanish government closed the frontier to all but residents and daily workers employed on Gibraltar.  2
 
1969, May 30
 
A new Gibraltar constitution declared the city “part of Her Majesty's dominions” until Parliament should decide otherwise, but in no case contrary to the wishes of the inhabitants.  3
 
June 5
 
By further measures of closure, the Spanish government threw 4,800 Spanish workers on Gibraltar out of employment.  4
 
June 27
 
The ferry service from Algeciras to Gibraltar was terminated.  5
