A new constitution was adopted to replace the 1933 constitution. It envisaged the construction of a “socialist society” for Portugal.  1

A moderate Socialist, Gen. Antonio Ramalho Eanes, was elected president in the first free elections in decades, and a Socialist government was formed. In the 1979–80 parliamentary elections, however, the Center-Right Democratic Alliance Coalition won 45 percent of the vote.  2
