Premier Antonio de Oliveira Salazar permitted the formation of opposition parties. Censorship was removed on Oct. 12, and a political amnesty was granted. Yet on Oct. 14, because of immediate attacks against his government, Salazar reimposed the censorship of the press.  1
 
Nov. 18
 
The first general election in years, because of a boycott by the opposition, brought victory for the National Union Party and the paternalist regime of Premier Salazar.  2
