Death of Abdallah ibn Idris al-Sanusi, a religious leader of modernist (salafi) intellectual leanings. He had studied in Egypt during the 1870s and come under the influence of Muhammad Abduh's thought. One of his most significant contributions was his lifelong campaign against ta‘wil, the allegorical interpretation of the sacred texts by Sufis. He held these ideas responsible for what he considered to be the degeneration of Islam in Morocco.  1
