Standard Oil of California was awarded an oil concession by the Saudi government. Ibn Saud made the grant despite opposition from conservative religious quarters. His primary concern at this time and over the next 20 years was internal security. Yet he had difficulty raising sufficient funds to police his kingdom, a predicament that led him to seek commercial and diplomatic subsidies. | 1 |
