Armistice between British forces and the Kemalist government. French and Italian troops had already withdrawn from the Straits, and the British agreed to do the same. The treaty also guaranteed eastern Thrace for the Turkish state.  1

ABOLITION OF THE SULTANATE by the National Assembly. The sultan was left only with the title of caliph, supreme spiritual leader of the Muslim world. Sultan MEHMED VI was deposed (Nov. 13), and his cousin ABDULMEJID was appointed the new caliph. The OFFICE OF CALIPH WAS ABOLISHED in 1924.  2
