At the Peza Conference of anti-Fascist forces, the National Liberation Movement was formed. It was dominated by the Communists. Its only rivals were the republican Balli Kombetar, formed in November, and the pro-Zog Legality Organization.  1
 
1943, Sept
 
With the Italian surrender, German forces occupied Albania.  2
 
1944, May
 
With southern Albania liberated, the National Liberation Movement convened a congress in Permet, where the movement was renamed the National Liberation Front and Hoxha became the supreme commander of the Albanian National Liberation Army. King Zog was formally deposed, and all treaties concluded by the Albanian government since 1939 were nullified.  3
 
Oct
 
When the National Liberation Front had consolidated its power over most of Albania (German troops withdrew completely by late November), it convoked a congress at Berat. Hoxha was named the head of a new provisional government dominated by Communists. (See Albania)  4
