The Germans took Memel after extorting an agreement from Lithuania. In return they guaranteed Lithuanian independence and integrity and concluded a commercial treaty.  1

Gen. Jonas Cernius, the chief of the general staff, formed a new National Coalition cabinet in which the outlawed opposition parties were represented. On April 8 Cernius resigned so that the government might not have a military character.  2
