Moving by sea to Guayaquil, Sucre achieved the liberation of Quito at the Battle of Pichincha (May 24). Bolívar moved to Quito and persuaded the provinces of Quito to unite with the Gran Colombia.  1

San Martín and Bolívar met at Guayaquil to discuss the politics of liberation. Bolívar's republicanism clashed with San Martín's monarchism and impeded cooperation. San Martín chose to withdraw (See 1822).  2
