Publication of the Kabul-based Persian language semimonthly Seraj al-akhbar (Torch of the News), which was read widely outside of Afghanistan. The editor, Mahmud Tarzi (d. 1933), made popular writing in Afghanistan conform to Middle Eastern rather than Indian journalistic precedent. Raised in Damascus, Tarzi was a nationalist who supported modernist and Pan-Islamist causes and helped organize the Young Afghan movement. (See Afghanistan)  1
