| Thiers resigned, and Marshal Marie Edmé MacMahon was elected president. MacMahon was to prepare the way for the restoration. However, an attempted reconciliation between the count of Chambord and the count of Paris (Aug. 5) failed when the count of Chambord again insisted on the white flag (Oct. 27). | 2 |
