Publication of the German-Austrian alliance of 1879. This was intended as a warning to Russia, where nationalist agitation against Germany and Austria continued.  2

Italy adhered to the alliance of Germany and Austria with Romania.  3

Crisis in the relations of Italy and the papacy. The pope was on the verge of leaving Rome. The Italians again feared an attack by France and induced the Germans and British to issue warnings.  4
