Britain's resettlement of more than 400 ex-slaves to Sierra Leone marked the first repatriation of freed slaves back to Africa. British abolitionists hoped the newly settled community of ex-slaves would spread Christianity, support the abolition of the slave trade, and become integrated into the Atlantic economy.  5
