Jacobite rising in Scotland. Battles of Sheriffmuir and Preston. Arrival of the Pretender (James III) from France (Dec. 1715). The duke of Argyll (John Campbell) dispersed the Jacobite troops without a battle and the Pretender fled (Feb. 1716). Impeachment of Jacobite leaders, execution of Dernwentwater and Kenmure (Feb. 24).  1

Riot Act passed as a result of Jacobite risings. The act enabled a magistrate to order any crowd (12 or more persons) to disperse by reading a proclamation (reading the riot act). This reading created great problems in implementation.  2
