Richard Cromwell, lord protector. New Parliament involved in a dispute with the army and Richard dissolved Parliament (April 22). Rump Parliament formed under Lenthall (speaker) and Richard induced to resign as lord protector. The army expelled the Rump and appointed a military committee of safety (Oct.). Reaction against the military restored the Rump (Dec. 26).  1

General George Monck and his army went to London. Monck reestablished the Long Parliament, including members of Parliament excluded by Pride's Purge (Feb. 21).  2
