Swaziland became independent under a constitutional monarchy headed by King Sobhuza. The royal family retained considerable influence over Parliament.  1
 
1980
 
Swaziland joined the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC), aimed at reducing dependence on South Africa. However, Swaziland signed a secret nonaggression accord with South Africa soon thereafter and has remained under considerable South African influence.  2
 
1982
 
King Sobhuza died after a 61-year rule, setting in motion conflict between the queen mother regent and Parliament during the minority of his successor, Prince Makhosetive.  3
 
1986
 
Prince Makhosetive was crowned as King Mswati III.  4

South Africa raided Swaziland in pursuit of ANC activists, and many ANC members were killed in Swaziland in 1986 and 1987.  5
