The United Democratic Front (UDF), a coalition of groups opposing apartheid, was founded to oppose tricameral parliament (which continued to exclude Africans from central government while attempting to incorporate Indians and mixed-race “coloureds”) and persisted as the principal opposition movement until it was dissolved after the unbanning of the ANC in 1990.  1
 
1984
 
South Africa agreed to stop aiding RENAMO rebels, and Mozambique agreed not to aid ANC guerrillas in the Nkomati Accord. South African assistance continued to flow to RENAMO.  2
 
1984–86
 
Uprisings in South African townships were marked by violent repression by the state and violent struggle among contending groups in townships. The UDF, in support of the rebellion, was opposed in Natal by Chief Buthelezi's Inkatha movement.  3

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) was founded, with 500,000 members.  4
 
1986, June 12
 
A nationwide state of emergency was declared in South Africa.  5
 
Oct
