A peace accord with the FRELIMO government of Pres. Chissano ended the 16-year rebellion by South African–backed RENAMO in Mozambique. Elections were planned.  1

Mozambique held its first multiparty elections. Incumbent president Joaquim A. Chissano of the FRELIMO Party won.  2
 
Dec. 9
 
Chissano was sworn in as president. All major ministerial positions went to members of FRELIMO.  3
