Tanzania held its first multiparty elections, choosing as president Benjamin W. Mkapa of Chama Chu Mapinduzi, or the Revolutionary Party, which had already been in power.  1
 
1998, Aug. 7
 
Terrorists, thought to be connected to Islamic militant and wealthy businessman Osama bin Laden, bombed the U.S. embassy in Dar es Salaam. Paired with an attack on the U.S. embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, the bombing in Tanzania killed ten and injured dozens more.  2
 
2000, Aug. 28
 
Often the host of peace talks for Burundi and other East African nations, Tanzania mediated a peace agreement between Burundian opposing factions in hopes of ending the Burundi civil war.  3
 
Oct. 29
 
Incumbent president Benjamin William Mkapa of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Party won reelection against three other major opponents. On the same day, allegedly tainted elections for the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar resulted in Amani Abeid Karume securing a position in the presidency.  4
