Following the resignation of Pres. Bizimungu, Maj. Gen. Paul Kagame, rebel leader of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), became the first Tutsi president in Rwanda's history.  1
 
June 19
 
Rwanda and Uganda withdrew from the Congolese capital city of Kisangani as demanded by the UN. At least 150 dead and 1,100 injured were left in their wake. Most of the fighting occurred between the two nations as a result of rebel divisions after the Congolese civil war, yet many civilians in Congo died as the fighting took place in their country. Rwanda was the definitive victor in the conflict.  2
