Armed rebels belonging to the National Patriotic Front of Liberia crossed into the country from the Ivory Coast, hoping to overthrow the Doe government. The rebel group, led by Charles Taylor, accused the Doe administration of widespread corruption and human rights abuses.  1
 
1990, Jan.–May
 
Taylor's rebel army took control of large portions of Liberia and began to move toward the capital. Fighting between government and troops escalated. Thousands of civilians were caught in the crossfire.  2
 
July
 
A rebel group under the control of Prince Johnson advanced into Monrovia, which was already partly controlled by forces loyal to Taylor.  3
 
Sept. 10
 
Pres. Doe was shot by Johnson's forces. The civil war continued following Doe's death. A stalemate developed between former Doe loyalists, Johnson's and Taylor's backers, and a five-nation West African peacekeeping force.  4
 
Nov. 28
 
The factions in Liberia signed a cease-fire agreement. An interim government under Amos Sawyer assumed power temporarily.  5
