1981
 
Widespread violence followed the March elections. Dacko's opponents accused him of rigging the elections and laid siege to Bangui, the capital city. After Dacko fled, Andre Kolingba formed the Comité Militaire pour le Redressement National (CMRN).  1
 
1985, Sept. 21
 
Kolingba dissolved the CMRN and formed a new government, which included several civilian ministers. The military continued to wield power behind the scenes.  2
 
1986, March
 
A French Jaguar aircraft crashed in Bangui, killing 35. Anti-French feeling surged, but Kolingba continued to allow the French to operate military bases in the country.  3
 
Oct
 
Bokassa returned to the Central African Republic, where he was put on trial.  4
