Sydney, Australia, hosted the XXVII Summer Olympic Games. The Australian theme for the event was modernization and conservation, which emphasized Australia's commitment to preserving the environment. In a symbolic event, Cathy Freeman, an Australian sprinter of aboriginal descent, was chosen to light the torch that began the games.  1
