Australia was the leading foreign power among international peacekeeping forces that entered East Timor to help quell the massacres in progress there.  1

In a national referendum, voters rejected a proposal to make Australia a republic. Since 55 percent of the vote was against the transition, Australia failed to sever its remaining ties to the British Crown. The proposed constitution had called for a parliament-chosen head executive instead of a popularly elected president.  2
