A coal strike almost stopped all industrial activity. It was settled, amid misleading claims of Communist instigation, with the aid of emergency legislation and the use of troops in operating the mines.  1

The general election brought a decisive victory to the anti-Labour coalition of the Liberal and Country Parties. In preelection campaigns, they had opposed the government's socialist measures, especially the Banking Act, and had promised effective action against Communism. A new coalition government was formed by Liberal leader Robert G. Menzies (Dec. 17). The Labour Party did maintain its majority in the Senate, where most of the new government's legislation was vetoed.  2
