A meeting of representatives from Great Britain, France, the U.S., the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand at Canberra established the South Pacific Commission to deal with all common questions concerning the treatment and general improvement of the native peoples.  1

Sir William McKell, an Australian citizen and member of the Labour Party, took office as governor-general.  2

To help alleviate the manpower shortage, Australia agreed to admit 12,000 displaced persons per year from Europe.  3
 
Nov. 27
 
The Banking Act, calling for the nationalization of the banks, was passed after bitter political debate. Intended to aid in the prevention of depression and inflation, opponents of the bill branded its adoption as dictatorial and unconstitutional.  4
